BASS
Soft plastics were the top choice for bass fisherman this week. The drop shot or Carolina rig were at the forefront of reports this week. 4” worms in green or purple worked great for the drop shot rig, and brushog's and lizards in variations of green pumpkin or watermelon were great for those using the Carolina rig. Tube jigs also picked up some nice bass this week. The bite has tapered, but big baits are still worth the effort bringing in some big bass this week. Z -Plugs, LA Sliders, Spro BBZ, and Lunker Punkers were the most reported lures with most of those catches occurring within the first 15 feet of water. Swimbait fisherman were focusing on the dams and near the marina, mainly in the morning, while worm and jig fisherman were working the coves 10 – 15 feet down. The national Bass West Tournaments on April 11thand 18thyielded some big weights with Mike Phua and Mike Lillibridge winning with 25.26 pounds on the 11thand Dino and Joey Caporuscio winning the 18thwith 22.81 pounds.
TROUT
Trout fishing at DVL has been great for some, but fair for most. There were some notable fish this week, but over all quantities were low. Nightcrawlers, spinners, mini jigs, Powerbait, and trout worms have been the best baits to use. Along the west shoreline, and in the marina cove were the best reported spots this week. Kimber McCallister and Julia miller caught their biggest fish at 3.34 pounds fishing from shore with green garlic bait. Nicholas Ortiz caught a 7.8 pound trout fishing from shore with Powerbait. Cindy Burke of Moreno Valley caught a 4.57 pound trout fishing from shore with cheese bait. Edward and Amanda Negron of Imperial Beach caught their two biggest fish at 8.80 and 6.35 pounds fishing from shore with Power worms. Joel Shanklin of Sun City caught a 4.00 pound trout fishing with an orange spinner.
STRIPER
Striper continued to bite this week, but not as feverishly as weeks past. The Z plug, LA Sliders, and Lunker Punkers remained the best baits for striper. The inlet tower and the east dam were the most reported striper spots. Francisco Flores of Los Angeles caught a 18.10 pound striper fishing near the marina with a swim bait. Jesse Mena of Hemet broke the DVL striper record this week with 33.27 pounds. He was fishing near the Inlet tower with a Lunker Punker.
CATFISH
Catfish has not been the preferred species for anglers, but those targeting cats have done quite well. Mackerel, anchovies, and shrimp are great for catfish. The wave attenuator and Rawson cove are the best spots.
PANFISH
The panfish reports were on the rise this week with crappie being the staple for panfish anglers. The bite will improve as the water gets warmer. Rawson cove and the saddle dam were the most reported spots Mini jigs, and live worms are the most common panfish baits.
