BASS This week’s bass fishing exemplified the superiority of the DVL bass fishery. Anglers have reported phenomenal numbers of quality fish on just about every lure and presentation imaginable. Carolina or Texas rigged brush hogs in green pumpkin and watermelon, drop shot rigged straight tail plastics in every color from oxblood to morning dawn, shad and baby bass flukes, topwater and jerkbaits, swimbaits, and senkos. Locations have varied nearly as much as the baits reported, but the depth range has held between 5 and 15 feet for bedding fish and 20 and 35 feet for post span hogs. Sean Caligiuri of Huntington Beach caught the biggest bass of the week at 10 pounds fishing with a senko.
TROUT DVL had a great week of stout trout. Shore anglers and boaters caught limits and lunkers on Powerbait, nightcrawlers, mini jigs, and trout worms. North shore coves are the hot spots for rainbows. Powerworms, spinners, nightcrawlers, and mini Jigs have been the best baits. Brandon Sherman of Murrieta reported a 5.9 pound trout fishing with rainbow Powerbait. Raymond Halsted of Hemet caught a 5 pound trout fishing with a Panther Martin from the west shore. “Fish Story” Lori Carnahan caught a 4.65 pound trout trolling in the third cove with a CD 5 brook tout Rapala.
STRIPER It was a slow week for striper Zplugs and LA Sliders were the most reported baits of the week. Matt Johnson of Hemet caught a 15 pound striper fishing from shore with a BBZ jr.
CATFISH Anglers have been consistently catching cats from shore as well as boats. Mackerel and anchovies have been the most reported baits, but shrimp and chicken liver has accounted for a few reports. The most reported areas have been the saddle dam, Rawson cove, and near the wave attenuator.
PANFISH It was another great week for pan fish. Blue gill have been concentrated around the stairways on either dam or shallow in the back of coves. Crappie has been appearing near the saddle dam and in Rawson cove. Both species have been biting live worms or mini jigs. There have been many blue gill catches around the 1 pound range and even more crappie catches near 3 pounds.
