Lake Norman, North Carolina

Got some color in the water now which is nice. Big plankton bloom underway going on so the shad, bluebacks, and alweife are are up shallow and I mean dirt shallow. I've never seen so many baitfish on this lake as I have this past weekend, it's really pretty to watch all the different species of baitfish working at the surface right next to the boat. Bluebacks by the way are not blue, they are blueish green so match colors accordingly and the size of these bait fish is super small (less than 2"). Stock shad rap is a good color match and always has been a great bait on this lake. Now for the bite...

Pretty quiet all things considered, did not see any schooling and only saw an occasional blow up regardless of where I fished. I spent Saturday uplake (above 150) and saw more baitfish in those areas/creeks but little to no bass activity. My guess is that the fish are still conditioned to feed at night which they do most of the time here in the Summer due to pressure and tons of boating traffic. Mostly LM's boated uplake which is customary and where most of your tournament winners will come from due to size over spots for the most part.

Fished downlake on Sunday for a few hours and saw similar conditions water temp and clarity wise but fewer baitfish. Bite was similar, slow. Spots bite a bit more but don't seem to be as big so it's a tradeoff on what you are looking for; size or numbers if you are taking any to the scales.

Baits were the usual, various smaller cranks, soft plastic stick baits, shakey heads with different trailers, etc. Zero action on topwater for me both days which is really unusual and disappointing as I like to catch em on a buzzbait, spook, pop-r, etc but they did not want anything to do with it this weekend. Might just need to cool down a bit in to the 70 degree range to fire them up or go even lower.

Boat traffic was pretty high on Saturday as it got nice and sunny after 11:00. Sunday stayed pretty low key as it does here this time of year.

Best 5 over the 2 days probably only went 10lbs which is not real good for this time of year. It will only continue to improve which is good.

Aimless drifter has been catching them on tertiary points I understand mid lake so he may be able to add some "color" to this post if he's watching/reading.

Tight lines, and watch the water temps. If they fall, it'll get better. If they stay the same, slow it down and soak those baits a little longer.
