The water has been really low at Hinton recently, but with the heavy rain yesterday I decided to run down there this morning for a little while. I ended up catching 9 smallies with the first one being worth the trip by itself. On the third cast I felt what I thought was a redeye lightly tapping my jig. When I set the hook I was quite surprised to feel a 4 1/2 pounder on the other end of my line. Not really expecting to tangle with one of the big ones this time of year I had brought the lightest baitcasting outfit that I own, a pixy with 6 pound line on it. After several awesome runs I finally landed her then released her back into her hole.
Most of the others that I caught weighed around a pound with one about 2 pounds. I caught every fish on a 1/8oz homemade football jig with a bass pro shops crawfish trailer in watermelon colors.
It won't be long until the big girls come out to play dwon there. The river above Claytor Lake in Virginia is already down in the high sixties and when it drops to 60 look out. The big ones will start feeding up for winter BIG TIME.
